The Essential Algeria Tour 2018-2019

Day 1: Algiers

Arrival in Algiers, transfer to your hotel in the center of the Capital. Overnight in Algiers. D

Day 2: Algiers

After breakfast depart for a full day city tour. You will visit the Casbah (World Heritage by UNESCO), the exterior of the Ketchaoua Mosque recently restored by Turkey, the museum of Arts and Popular Traditions, and the Pasha palace with its collection of Illuminations. After lunch, we continue the visit of the modern districts of the capital with its museums of Antiquities, Islamic Arts, and the Bardo, and the monument dedicated to the martyrs. We will also visit the Villa Abdeltif, also known as la Villa Medicis Algérienne. It is a Moorish villa and is notable for having been set up in 1907 in emulation of the French Academy in Rome, the Villa Medici. It was, until 1962, home to the laureates of the Abd-el-Tif prize who were offered bursaries to continue their studies for two years in Algeria. It was abandoned in in1967 but was restored in 2008. Day 3: Alger-Djémila-Constantine

After breakfast, depart by car to Djémila to visit the antique city, ancient Cuicul (World Heritage by UNESCO), a Roman colony founded during the reign of Nerva (96-98 AD). Djemila is located in the neighboring region of Constantine and Petite Kabylie (Lower Kabylia). It is an exceptional antiquities site, well preserved of significant historical. In the afternoon, continue to Constantine, “Arab Cultural Capital of 2015” and ancient Cirta. Overnight in Constantine. B/L/D

Day 4: Constantine-Timgad-Constantine

After breakfast, depart to visit the mausoleum of “Medracen” (the largest pre-Roman monument in the Maghreb, 3-4 centuries before our area Berber with Punic and Greek influences) and continue to Timgad, the roman city (World Heritage by UNESCO), built in the first century during the reign of Trajan in the 1st century. Visit the main monuments including the forum, theater, baths, and capitol. After lunch in a traditional house, you will visit a part of the ruins of Lambeze and the museum, then return back to Constantine. Overnight in Constantine. B/L/D

Day 5: Constantine-Oran

After an early breakfast, we will tour the city of Constantine, a fortress city built on the edge of a canyon that almost completely surrounds the city. It is known as the city of cliffs and bridges. Visit the mosque of Emir Abdelkader, the Bey Palace and the Cirta museum. We take the cable car for a fantastic ride to visit some ancient bridges and the monument. Transfer to the airport for your flight to Oran at 12h05. Arrival at 13h35. We will drive to Tlemcen, with a stop Sidi Bel Abbès to take a coffee or tea break in a traditional cottage run by a very dynamic lady who loves this region, the west of the country. Arrival at Tlemcen, Islamic Cultural Capital of 2011. Orientation tour and transfer to your hotel. Overnight in Tlemcen. B/D

Day 6: Tlemcen

After breakfast this morning we depart for a full day of sightseeing in Tlemcen.  Tlemcen was built in the 11th century by Sultan Almoravide Youcef Ben Tafchine. Many Andalusians settled in Tlemcen and brought their arts. City of Arts and Stories, Tlemcen contains wealth and the most beautiful monuments of Muslim art in Algeria, including the Great Mosque (11th century), the Museum, the Mechouar, the Governors Palace (restored in 2011) and city walls (12th century). In the area we will visit the village of El Eubbad with the Mansurah minaret in the style of the Koutoubia (Marrakech, Morocco) and the Giralda (Seville, Spain). Overnight in Tlemcen. B/L/D

Day 7: Tlemcen-Oran-Ghardaia

After breakfast we depart by car to Oran. On arrival we will have a short visit of the town including the outside of the Cathedral transformed today a library and Santa Cruz site. After we transfer to the airport for your flight to Ghardaia via Algiers at 13:35 pm. Arrival at Ghardaia at 20h00, transfer to your Saharan residence in the palm grove of Béni Isguen. Overnight in Ghardaia. B/D

Day 8: Ghardaia

After breakfast we depart for a full day excursion to the M’Zab Valley and oasis (World Heritage by UNESCO). We will see the Great Mosque (from the outside) founded in 1053 and see the unique system of irrigation and visit the market with a large square of carpet shops, one of the great specialties of M’Zab. After lunch, continue the visit: El Atteuf and Melika cities (the medina has greatly inspired architects of the world including Le Corbusier). In the afternoon, visit the traditional market of Beni Isguen, and the holy city of M’Zab. Overnight in Ghardaia. B/L/D

Day 9: Ghardaia-Alger: Tipasa and Cherchell

After breakfast we transfer to the airport to fly to Algiers at 08h15. On arrival at 09h45 depart for an excursion to Cherchell and Tipasa. Cherchell is 100 km west of Algiers and was built in the 4th century BC. During Roman times for and the reign of Juba II, a Berber prince, Cherchell was known as “Ceasarée”, capital of the kingdom of Mauretania. We will visit some of the ruins in the center of the city and the Museum which contains some beautiful mosaics. The current small fishing port was built on the site of the ancient port. Continue to Tipasa (30 km), an ancient city built near the sea, between the 6th and 5th century BC. Formerly Phoenician, Tipasa became a Roman colony in the 2nd century AD. We will visit the Museum and Archaeological Park of this UNESCO World Heritage Site. Tipasa enchanted the French philosopher, born in Algeria, Nobel Prize winner Albert Camus, author of “Noces” and “l’Etranger” in particular. We will drive back to Algiers, along the way stop for quick visit of the Royal Mauretanien Tomb, also called the Tomb of the Christian. Overnight in Algiers. B/L/D

Day 10: Transfer to the airport for your departure. B
