Day 1 Upon
our arrival in Tripoli, you will be met and assisted and then transferred
to your hotel for dinner and overnight.
Day 2 Today you
begin our exploration of Libya's capital city: Tripoli. Depart the hotel
after breakfast for a full day of sightseeing which will include the
old city, the National Museum, which is known for the quantity and quality
of the artifacts on display and covers several millennia of Libyan and
North African history, culture, and art. In the evening return to the
hotel for dinner and overnight.
Day 3 After breakfast
you will go to Leptis Magna, a magnificent ancient Roman city, and the
capital of what once was Rome's Africa Province. Afterwards, you will
visit the Byzantine Villa Sileen. The floor of every room in this mansion
is covered in beautiful mosaics. The house faces the ocean with a secluded
garden and courtyard with even more mosaics with intricate scenes depicted.
In the evening return to Tripoli for dinner and overnight.
Day 4 Today you
will have a tour to the western mountains famous for the indigenous
architecture and culture. Starting with Qasr Al Haj and visit the granary
which was used to store barley and olive oil for the entire town. Continue
on up the mountain to visit the castles Jado and Kabaow. Afterwards
go to the town of Gharyan, famous for its pottery shops. After visiting
the town you will return to Tripoli for dinner and overnight.
Day 5 This morning
you will take a short flight to Benghazi. Once there you will drive
to Apollonia, stopping on the way at to visit Tocra for a visit of the
museum, and then on to Tolmeita (Ptolemais) where we will also visit
the site and museum. Tolmeita was founded by the Greeks in the 4th century
BC as one of the privileged cities of the Pentapolis, which continued
under the Roman rule, as well. Overnight in Sousa or Al Bayda.
Day 6 After breakfast
enjoy a nice drive along the coast to visit World War II Commonwealth
Cemeteries. Continue on to Tobrok for dinner and overnight.
Day 7 Today we
will enjoy an early morning visit to the sites of ancient port of Apollonia,
once a part of the network of Greek cities along this part of the Libyan
coast, and its most important port. In the afternoon we will visit the
ancient city of Cyrene. Dinner and overnight in Sousa.
Day 8 After breakfast
we will return to Benghazi via Qasr Libya to visit some remarkable collections
of Byzantine mosaics. Once in Benghazi we will board our flight back
to Tripoli. Dinner and overnight in Tripoli.
D ay 9 This morning
we will make an early visit to the ancient Roman city of Sebratha, once
one of the three major Roman cities, giving the Latin name of Tripolitania
to the region. There are also Punic and Byzantine ruins at this site
as well. In the late afternoon we will return to Tripoli. Dinner and
overnight in Tripoli.
Day 10 Today is
free and at your leisure. Overnight in Tripoli.
Day 11 Departure.
