Day 1: Welcome to Algeria! Upon your arrival at Algiers, transfer and short orientation tour of Algiers. Dinner on overnight at the hotel. (D)
Day 2: Algiers Today we will have a full day tour of the capital city of Algiers. We will visit the Kasbah (UNESCO World Heritage Site), which is the old part of the city. We will also visit several museums including the Museum of Popular Arts, and the Mustapha Bacha and Raïs Palaces. After lunch, we will visit the Museum of Antiquities, the Islamic Museum and the Bardo (if restoration is completed). The Bardo Museum is housed in a palace built for a Tunisian prince and is of interest as well as the collections it houses. If the Bardo is not open we will visit the Beaux Arts Museum near the Botanic Garden and the Martyrs Monument. Dinner and overnight in Algiers. (B/D)
Day 3: Algiers-Tamanrasset The morning we visit “The Basilica of Notre Dame d’Afrique” and have a short tour in the modern city. In the afternoon, we visit the Botanical Garden and the monument. After dinner, transfer to the airport for your flight to Tamanrasset at 10:00 pm. Arrival at 12:25 am. Transfer and overnight in Tamanrasset. (B/D)
Day 4: Tamanrasset-Assekrem After breakfast depart by 4×4 vehicle for a two day tour to Assekrem. Stop along the road near “Guelta”, (water sources) and enjoy a picnic for lunch and tea, then a walk to explore the rock carvings. Upon arrival in Assekrem, you will check in to the “Refuge” at (2600 m altitude). Then walk, climb 130 meters for a spectacular view of the mountains of Atakor (rocky peaks etc.), then visit the Hermitage (chapel) of “Père de Foucault”, built in 1910 and watch the sunset. Dinner and tea prepared by our cook. Overnight at the Refuge. (B/L/D) (Please note that it can be very cold here at night so be sure to bring warm clothes. The facilities are very basic, so be sure to have a flashlight in case of power outage, extra tissues, etc.)
Day 5: Assekrem-Tamanrasset This morning you will head back to Tamanrasset by a slightly different route to explore other landscapes and rock carvings. Picnic for lunch along the way. On arrival at Tamanrasset, enjoy a visit of the town with its red houses, typical African architecture, and the market and craft workshops specialized in forging, silver jewelry etc. Walk through the main street enjoying its colorful atmosphere and where you meet camels and Tuaregs called “the blue men”. Return to Outoul for dinner and overnight. (B/L/D)
Day 6: Tamanrasset After breakfast set out for a full day excursion to visit other Saharan sites around Outoul (Tit and Abalessa) and Tamanrasset. Lunch at Tamanrasset, which is also the base for people traveling into the Hoggar Mountains, and it’s a crossroads in the heart of the desert that is occupied by the Tuaregs. Visit the city then return to your hotel. (B/L/D)
Day 7: Tamanrasset-Ghardaia Rise early and after breakfast transfer to the airport for your flight to Ghardaia at 6:15 am. Arrival at 8:45 am and go for a short visit of the city of Ghardaia. The original architecture has inspired great architects around the world. Visit the original system of irrigation and the “Place of Market” where the craftsmen display their very colorful products. The M’Zab country is famous for carpets and handicrafts. After lunch visit the holy city of Beni Isguen. Dinner and overnight at the Traditional Villa in the palmeraie of Béni Isguen. (B/L/D)
Day 8: Ghardaia After breakfast we depart for a tour of the Pentapolis of M’Zab, visiting the M’Zab Valley and oasis (UNICCO World Heritage site), the Great Mosque founded in 1053 and Melika cities. Lunch outside the hotel. In the afternoon, continue your visit to El Atteuf and other sites. Return to Béni Isguen for dinner and overnight. (B/L/D)
Day 9: Ghardaia-El Goléa-Timimoun This morning depart to El Golea, visit the palmeraie and the old Ksar. After lunch continue to Timimoun for a walking tour through the city called “The Red Oasis”, the “Door of Sudan” built in clay and red ocher and the old Ksar Sudanese architecture. Dinner and overnight in Timimoun. (B/L/D)
Day 10: Timimoun This morning after breakfast you will depart for a full day excursion to explore the red villages and ksours around the “Sebkha” to discover “Guelman Hajj” (Tinerkouk), Ighzer and Ouled Saïd, with their palm groves and ksour irrigated by an ingenious foggaras system, the underground galleries, ducts, and channels similar to those in Yazd, Iran. Enjoy a picnic lunch, and head back to the hotel at the end of the afternoon. Dinner and overnight at the hotel in Timimoun (B.L.D)
Day 11: Timimoun-Adrar After breakfast depart to Adrar, capital of the Touat region. Here you will visit the old Kasbah of the Kaid, the old Ksar (11th century) and the “Great Palace”. After lunch you take the “Highway of Palms” to visit Tamentit, an ancient religious capital which was founded in the 13th to the 15th century and an important caravan stop, and a Jewish community lived there until 1492. Dinner and overnight in Adrar. (B/L/D)
Day 12: Adrar-Algiers The morning, we return to visit other sites at Adrar then transfer to the airport for your flight to Algiers at 1:15 pm. Arrival at 4:05 pm and transfer to hotel. Dinner and overnight in Algiers. (B/D)
Day 13: Algiers – Tipasa/Cherchell-Algiers After breakfast we will depart for a full day excursion along the coast to Cherchell (ancient Caesarea) and Tipasa. Cherchell was founded in the 4th century BC by the Carthaginians, then in 25 BC the Romans captured it, called it Caesarea, and made it into the capital of Mauretania province. Stop on the road to visit the Royal Mauretania Mausoleum where King Juba II and Queen Cleopatra Selene II, monarchs under Roman rule, are buried. Afterwards we will stop for lunch then visit the Roman town of Tipasa, originally founded by Phoenicians (UNESCO World Heritage Site). In the 2nd century it became a Roman colony, then eventually became one of the most important Christian settlements of North Africa. Return to Algiers for dinner and overnight. (B/D)
Day 14: Algiers -Djémila-Algiers After an early breakfast we will depart to Djémila (UNESCO World Heritage Site). Our tour of the city will included the magnificent Roman city of ancient Cuicul (the original name of Djémila), founded by Emperor Nerva in the 1st century). We will have lunch in Djémila, and in the afternoon return to Sétif and Algiers for overnight. (B/L/D)
Day 15: Transfer to the airport for departure. (B)
