I found this interesting since it sounded somewhat familiar. In norther Syria there is the Basilica of St. Simeon who was a Stylite- a monk who lived in isolation to better concentrate and pray. St. Simeon lived atop a pillar and was provided for by pilgrims who would bring him food and drink. I just read this story of a modern day St. Simeon in one of our newer destinations – Georgia.
